384 Tube Picking

The major benefit of single-use tube technology is the avoidance of freeze/thaw effects on sample integrity. Other benefits include enabling a reduction to be made in the physical quantity of sample stored, and also allowing ´assay-ready´ samples to be dispatched for use in downstream processes without the need for further processing at an integrated liquid handling station.

This storage methodology can however cause throughput bottlenecks for downstream processes such as HTS and uHTS. This is due to most existing single-use tube storage systems taking between one to five seconds to pick a single tube. If, in a typical scenario, as many as 50,000 samples a day are required to be picked, this picking speed can act as a limitation.

To overcome this limitation, the RTS 384 Multi-Pix employs a novel RTS-patented picking head (Patent No. EP1548446), providing fast activation times with the potential to pick and place multiple tubes in a single pick/place cycle. Up to 126 tubes may be picked simultaneously, resulting in a greatly increased pick rate equal to 0.1 second per tube for the direct transfer of 384 tubes.
